Burning Tips

  1. You should never leave a fire unattended.
  2. You should always check your damper before starting a fire to make sure it’s open, Even if the damper is left open, high winds can cause it to slam shut, so make sure you check it first.
  3. The National Fire Protection Association recommends that all chimneys be inspected annually and cleaned as needed. We recommend our ACA certified technicians.
  4. Burn hard woods such as Oak, Maple, Hickory, Elm etc. during the day & soft woods such as Pine, Spruce, Poplar and Fir at night because they burn fast and there is less of a chance of the embers causing a fire.
  5. You should always keep a set of fireplace tools and gloves near you fireplace in the event you have to more burning wood or hot coals.
  6. Try to keep your fireplace screen closed when it’s possible. This keeps sparks from flying out and causing fires. Try to allow at least 3 inches of open space on each end of the wood. # Also make sure the grate isn’t too far out. This would allow the logs to roll out of the fireplace.
  7. There are several ways to make your fireplace more efficient. First you could have a Lock-Top damper installed. This will prevent drafts & pre conditioned air from being escaping. Make sure you burn properly seasoned wood with a moisture content between 15-25%. This is done to prevent the buildup of creosote inside the chimney. You can also have a carbon steel plate installed. It will radiate heat into the room.
  8. Make sure your chimney is protected from animal invasion; they can leave behind bedding material & fecal matter. These can cause you health problems as well as being a fire hazard.
  9. Get your chimney cleaned right after the burning season to cut down on unwanted odors so your summers will be odor free.
  10. Your chimney is constantly exposed to the elements. With a little preventative maintenance you can avoid expensive repairs down the road.
