The chimney cap is your fireplace and chimney “protector”. The purpose of the chimney cap is to shield out rain, snow, wind, leaves, sticks, and debris. The chimney cap also serves as an animal guard to keep out raccoons, squirrels, bats, and BIRDS. It also serves as a spark arrestor during a fire to keep fiery chunks and sparks inside the flue instead of on the roof of your home.
Chimney cap come in various shapes and sizes. They are usually made of galvanized metal, stainless steel, or copper. We also provide Energy Efficient Lock-top Damper that function as both a cap and a damper. This product is more energy efficient to help you keep the elements out and your energy dollars in your pocket. Be sure to ask about this upgrade.
Homemade screens or chicken wire flush across the top of the chimney flue is a recipe for disaster. Flush chicken wire and netting allow for potential ice over (snow accumulations). This can restrict exhaust flow emissions (poisonous carbon monoxide gas and smoke). Having a plugged-up chimney cap (or improperly sized chimney cap) at the top of your chimney is just like having a closed nozzle at the end of a hose – you just can’t get any airflow through the chimney.
Advantages of a chimney cap:
- A rain cap keeps out rain & snow – eliminating chimney liner saturation, frost, & ice formation.
- Chimney caps keep animals and their nesting out of your chimney.
- The spark arrestor of a chimney cap stops stray sparks from leaving your chimney.
- Chimney caps help to eliminate & minimize wind downdrafts that can cause fireplace smoke backup.
